Chapter Five

Unexpected Fortune

When I woke in my motel room it was nearly sundown. I retrieved the tranquer pistol, activated the thim and pressed the three symbols Lt. Jenkins had showed me in his office. In moments, three unmarked air cars touched down in the parking lot. I ran out of the room and waved my arms. “Over here. Boy, am I glad to see you. I found…”

An officer pulled out her tranquer pistol and squeezed the trigger. I dropped to my knees as every voluntary muscle in my body relaxed. Being hit by a tranq isn’t painful. Your heart and breathing remain normal. You can still think clearly. You just can’t move except to blink your eyes. I was lifted into one of the cars. A hood was placed over my head as the whir of the machine increased. No one spoke. A tranq usually wears off in fifteen minutes, but I remained immobile long past that.

The car landed. Hands placed me on a stretcher, though I still could not see through the hood. The whoosh of several doors opened and closed before the stretcher stopped and I was sat on the floor, then lifted into a chair. Straps secured my legs and chest. With the prick of a needle, control returned to my muscles. The hood was removed and I opened my eyes.

I sat in a hard, straight-backed chair. A bright light shone in my face. I looked up to a large, semi-circular desk where twelve men and women, sat. They wore white, long sleeve shirts. All had shaved heads.

A man in the center stood. “Welcome, Detective Chen. We are the directors, and we thank you for your service. I am Director Peton.”

There was a flutter in my chest. No one ever saw the directors. These were the people who controlled the world and everything in it. I, George Chen, was in the presence of the most powerful of the powerful. My breathing quickened and I found myself sweating.

Director Peton raised a hand. “Please, detective. Do not be nervous.”

“It’s just that I never dreamed I would meet you. I am deeply honored.”

A woman stood. “It is we who are honored. You have risked your life to combat a disease that would destroy our world. These rebels hate us and all we love. Their goal is nothing short of world destruction. They cannot be appeased. They must be hunted down.”

I began to describe the case when the woman stopped me. “There is no need to give a report. Even though it was not linked to The Connection, your thim recorded every action you took while in Williams. Your investigation was commendable, but we were not interested in one person. We planned for you to be abducted by the criminals.”

A numb tingle ran down my fingers. This was not what I expected. “But I met them. I can identify their leader, a woman who told this ridiculous tale about the robots degrading. She claimed to be Director Hansford. We have to go back and find that house.
